Four students from Big Walnut Middle School have been selected as recipients of the 2016 Scholastic Art Awards.

Sierra Sanders and Catherine Cook received Silver Key Awards for their art works, and Kimmie Serna and Emily Bryant were awarded honorable mentions.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

The alliance is an organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent, and present their work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Through the awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication and scholarships. Students across America submitted 300,000 original works during the 2015 program year across 28 different categories of art and writing.

Through the awards, teens in grades 7-12 can apply in 29 categories of art and writing for chances to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited and published.

Sierra and Catherine will have their work displayed in the 2015 Central Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibition at Columbus College of Art and Design. The exhibit will run from Feb. 13-25.

“Big Walnut Middle School is very proud of these students for such an outstanding representation of our school,” said middle school art teacher Nancy Crawford. “It’s a big accomplishment, especially for middle school students, considering that they had to compete against middle and high school students from all central Ohio schools.”
