Vazquez twins Student Painters managers

Delaware County’s Vasquez twins are planning a summer business serving the Big Walnut and Westerville areas as managers with Student Painters House Painting, an organization that sponsors exterior house painting businesses run by college students majoring in business.

Most Big Walnut High School sports fans will remember Jason and Kevin Vazquez. The brothers were standout members of the Big Walnut High boys soccer team.

But Jason and Kevin have moved on. They’re now attending The Ohio State University. Jason is a freshman studying business/economics; Kevin is a freshman in business/finance.

Jason explained that Student Painters is an internship program founded in 1987 in Michigan that helps college students start up businesses, both to earn college money and gain business experience.

“We have to market the business, make signs, distribute flyers, do estimates, hire and train painters, and manage the business,” Jason said. “Student Painters provides us with $1 million in liability coverage, and all Student Painter paint jobs have a two-year guarantee.”

Kevin said that even though they are both attending OSU full time, they started marketing Student Painters this month, and they are seeking necessary equipment and getting ready to hire and train crews.

The twins said they would be separate managers – Jason covering the 43082 ZIP Code, Kevin covering 43081 — but they won’t be rivals. They will overlap and go where work takes them.

“In March and April we’ll start booking jobs and estimating,” Kevin said. “We’ll start painting in May and paint through August. We’ll paint in the Big Walnut area, Westerville, and even go up to Centerburg or east to Johnstown.”

Jason and Kevin both painted in a Student Painters crew in New Albany last summer that was managed by a business student attending Miami University, so they have firsthand experience in how Student Painters operates.

“I feel really optimistic,” Jason said. “Only two or three managers out of this year’s group have worked for a Student Painters manager before like we have, so we know a lot more about what’s expected of us. We’re ready to work hard, do the best that we can, and have a great summer.”

Kevin said he’s really excited about the opportunity to be a Student Painters manager.

“We’ll work hard, and we’ll work smart,” Kevin said. “We’ve seen the whole process before, so we’re confident of the work we can do.”

According to the Student Painters website, crews do a full service exterior paint job that begins with pressure-washing the home before starting. Painters then scrape and feather sand all areas that are peeling, and caulk and prime as needed. A paint job takes one to two days and all paints and materials are Sherman Williams products.

Jason and Kevin are full-time students, so they said callers may have to wait for a return call if they are in class, but they said they would respond to inquiries as soon as possible.
