The city of Powell’s newest mayor and vice mayor were selected by Powell City Council Tuesday during the first meeting of the new year. Daniel Swartwout was selected by council to serve as the mayor, while Tom Counts was selected to serve as vice mayor.

For Swartwout, who was first elected to council in 2016 and most recently served as the vice mayor the past two years, this nod marks his first stint as the head of council. During his time on council, Swartwout has also served as the chairman of the city’s Operations Committee.

Roles for the mayor include serving as the presiding officer of council and acting as the head of the city government for events and ceremonies. In his absence, Counts would fulfill those roles. Both terms will last two years.

“It is an honor to serve as mayor of the Powell community,” said Swartwout. “I look forward to working with my colleagues on city council, our staff as well as the members of the community as we continue to make Powell a great place to call home.”

Counts has been a mainstay on city council dating back to his initial term in 2006. In 2008, he was selected to serve as Powell’s mayor, and he has also served as the chairman of the Finance Committee, as well five-year stints with both the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Planning Commission. He was reelected to another term on council in November, along with two other incumbents in previous Mayor Frank Bertone and Brian Lorenz.

Powell City Council’s newest member, Christina Drummond, was also sworn in along with the incumbents during the meeting. Drummond, who also ran for council in 2017, scored a narrow victory on Election Day with a margin of just 12 votes to take the fourth and final available council seat.
