BST&G busy this summer

SUNBURY — During the afternoon rush hour Thursday, people driving along state Route 3 may have seen smoke coming from an apartment building across the street from the Kroger shopping center.

“Working Commercial Structure Fire in Sunbury, OH, tonight on Millson Drive,” the BST&G Fire District posted on Facebook Aug. 11. “No injuries reported. Numerous agencies responded on a 2nd alarm response.”

BST&G said the fire is under investigation.

This was part of what was a busy week for the Fire District.

On Aug. 12, BST&G, as well as the Berlin Township Fire Department, Delaware County Emergency Management Agency, and Delaware County EMS, “handled a small HazMat spill.”

Earlier in the week, BST&G issued a six-hour boil alert for “all of Bent Tree Road,” which has a Sunbury address. The district also posts severe weather warnings.

Like many, the Fire District is hiring. The opening is for a part-time firefighter/EMT. Applications are available online at www.bstgfire.org.

The district often reposts safety tips on social media, such as the potential risks of using a portable generator — for example, it must be used outdoors and the exhaust kept away from entrances or windows. Another tip: Don’t refuel the generator while it is still hot.

“With the power outages, we have seen an increase in calls related to generators (odor investigations, carbon monoxide calls, etc.),” the district posted on July 24.

In July, the district held a Safety Town event with Delaware County EMS and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for local children at General Rosecrans Elementary. “The rain put a little damper on our plans, but we still had a great time showing off our equipment to the kids inside,” read a Facebook post from July 27.

Sometimes area businesses assist the district, for example, local State Farm agent Joni Stanton has donated a fire prevention kit for educational purposes as part of a statewide effort.

“BST&G Fire District serves the people of Berkshire, Sunbury, Trenton & Galena in Central Ohio,” its Facebook page said. The station is at 350 W. Cherry St., Sunbury.
