SUNBURY — The city’s square has been a summer fun spot for many this year.
On Labor Day, there was a flea market, as there was on Memorial Day, twin bookends to the summer months. A highlight of the event was a 50/50 raffle by the Sunbury Big Walnut Kiwanis to help raise money to build a playground at the new Big Walnut Intermediate School.
Sunbury Sizzle and Sounds was a 12-hour event on the square on Aug. 20.
“Thank you to the Big Walnut Civic Association and all the wonderful sponsors for another spectacular Sunbury Sizzle and Sounds!” the city posted on its Facebook page afterwards. “Although we had some rain, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of those who attended. Thank you to the residents of Sunbury and our Big Walnut neighbors who came out to support the bands, the food trucks, arts and crafts vendors, and others who participated in this year’s event. And finally, what kid didn’t love the kids’ zone and all the amazing features? Mark your calendars for August 19, 2023, when we will do it all again!”
On Aug. 1, the city officially dedicated a tree on the town square in honor of Len Weatherby, who served Sunbury for 31 years.
“Mayor Joe St. John and council members Tim Gose and Dave Martin were on hand to help commemorate the event and celebrate with the family,” the city posted.
Also this summer, the square held Movies on the Square for kids, an Independence Day Celebration that included a parade, and a cornhole tournament.
The fun continues with farmers markets on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon through Sept. 24.
Also in Sunbury, the city had a good week of weather last week as it swept all its public streets. Residents were encouraged to park their cars off the public streets. The north side of the city was swept Aug. 29-30, the west Aug. 30-31, the south Aug. 31-Sept. 1, and the east Sept. 1-2.
“Street sweeping allows for the collection and removal of litter, leaves, and other visible debris that gather in the street gutters,” the city said. “This debris can block storm drain facilities, causing localized flooding during heavy rains. Street sweeping also helps to remove metal particles and other hazardous waste left by passing vehicles. These particles can be extremely harmful to fish and other wildlife if they reach our creeks.”
