GALENA — A community potluck will take place Sunday in Harlem Township.

The “Harlem Township Civic Association Annual Community Potluck Picnic and Entertainment in the park on State Route 605 begins at 5 p.m., said the township’s government Facebook page. “Bring a dish to share. Soft drinks and tableware will be provided. Come see Mama Drama, the acoustic dynamic duo of Heather Pennington McPeters and Dave Eidelberg as they perform popular songs, recent and past from 6-7:30 p.m. Bring a lawn chair to relax and enjoy their concert.”

That’s not all that’s been happening in the Harlem Township Community Park.

In a letter to Center Village residents dated Aug. 25, Harlem Township trustees Dave Jackson, Jerry Paul and Carl Richison wrote, “Beginning the week of Sept. 1, the Township will begin working with Loewendick Demolition Contractors in the tearing down of the old concrete plant. At this time, it is our intent to remove the building, one silo and parts of the concrete pad, leaving one silo (if it is structurally sound) for the potential of a historical mural for the park. As excited as we are with the removal of this structure, we understand that this may create some excessive traffic, noise, and demolition dust. Please rest assured that we have had the demolition site tested for asbestos by the Ohio Technical Company and the results were negative. We ask for you to please bear with us during this time.”

The historical mural has more than 200 years of happenings in Harlem. The township, in its current form, was created in 1810 and has previously been split off from Sunbury and Genoa.

There is currently a fence around the structure.

The park will also be the site of a Fall Festival with a Trunk or Treat event on Oct. 29 and Winter in the Park on Dec. 12.

Also in the township, the website said the Ohio Department of Transportation “has delayed the culvert replacement project at State Route 37 and Lewis Road until sometime in October. We will notify you as soon as they provide us with exact closure dates.”

And the Delaware County Engineer’s Office said it’s “extending the road closure on Miller-Paul Road between Trenton Road and Woodtown Road for bridge replacement until Oct. 7.”
