The SAFE Delaware County Coalition is warning drivers to take safety precautions while on the roadways as 2022 is on a trend to be the deadliest in Delaware County since 2016.

“Historically, the county suffers anywhere from four to eight deadly motor vehicle crashes during the last three months of the year,” said Jackie Bain, SAFE Delaware County Coalition coordinator. “We have already seen 13 traffic deaths, with three in September alone.”

Bain added that, in comparison, 2021 only saw 10 fatal crashes occur in the entire county.

The dominating factor leading to traffic deaths this year has been lack of seat belt use. Of the victims, 70% were lost due to injuries sustained due to not being properly restrained at the time of the crash. In addition, at least 62% of the at-fault drivers were impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. Three crash victims were motorcycle drivers, which factors like not wearing a helmet, speed, failure to yield or control contributed to these crashes turning deadly. Last, it is estimated that driver distraction contributed to at least one-third of the fatal crashes to date.

SAFE deeply sympathizes with the loss of these lives. It is important to point out that every one of the factors involved in these crashes were, in fact, preventable. It remains vital that everyone gives full attention every trip to avoid these behaviors that lead to traffic fatalities.
