Big Walnut cheerleaders win OCC title again

Members of the Big Walnut High School competition cheerleading team brought home their ninth Ohio Capitol Conference championship since 2001 on Feb. 14.

“This is the fourth year in a row that Big Walnut has won first place at the OCC cheer competition and the team couldn’t be more excited,” said Big Walnut High head cheerleading coach Savannah Brown. “I’m extremely proud of this group of girls. They really went above and beyond to make sure that they left no doubt that they deserved that first place.”

Brown said the squad had a lot of help from upper class cheerleaders this year in choreographing the routine; that seniors Katie Perry and Devin Reardon, and junior Marisa Hageman wanted to make sure that the team’s routine had all the elements of gaining a first-place win.

“We really wanted to leave a mark this year,” the three upper class cheerleaders said in a written statement. “We knew as upper classmen what it was going to take to win first place in a division that was generally dominated by another team. It was a lot of hard work, but we pulled it off. Bringing home our fourth OCC title in a row was just the icing on the cake.”

Members of the 2016 team are Katie Perry, Devin Reardon, Marisa Hageman, Aaliyah Mabe, Olivia Shope, Allie Tornes, Madi Travis, Ashley Montgomery, Erica Buck, Autumn Leidtke, Anna Cryan, Stephanie Smith, Caitlyn Bailey, Lindsey Stagg, Kayla Simms and Ashley Dew.

Assisting Brown was junior varsity cheerleading coach Mary Sanchez.
