It’s interesting watching Republican legislators struggle with Health Care reform — and other objectives. Or watching pundits respond to the chaos by: identifying contradictions; naming “villains;” and making predictions.

The source of political confusion for the GOP is “PROMISE-ITIS” — a malady caused by over promising. They’ve made so many promises that their legislative goals have become “inflamed.” OVER-promising afflicts both parties, but Republicans have gone overboard. Their PROMISE-ITIS has prompted inflamed rhetoric, painful realities, a rash of name-calling, and paralyzed legislative action.

Their PROMISE-ITIS about Health Care has created a self-inflicted dilemma. They’ll be viewed as reneging on REPEAL promises — unless the total ACA is repealed. That obsessive REPEAL promise blinded them to pitfalls in doing so.

Republican, obsessive emotional investment in REPEAL has meant they developed no plan for replacing it. Thus the current stalemate and wrangling in Congress.

The GOP now faces consequences of their myopia. They’ve been blind to real ACA benefits for millions of Americans — even many Republicans. They’ve been surprised by the push back from countless citizens awakened to the severe consequences of GOP proposals.

The House and Senate proposals to REPEAL the ACA mean significant tax giveaways to the wealthy. One premier economist notes that 40 percent of the tax giveaways would go to persons earning more than $1,000,000 per year — at a “cost” of only 2 percent addition to their tax bill.

I’d like to believe Republican legislators know how immoral this is, to take from the poor to pay the rich. The problem is their PROMISE-ITIS. This political affliction has so infested their vision and thinking that they seem unable to think like the responsible legislators and loyal citizens I want to think they are.
