Nicole Fowles: Orange library branch offering yoga classes

0

What do you get when you cross a librarian with a yoga instructor? A great new series at the Orange branch library!

If you’ve picked up a copy of the spring issue of “Check It Out” or if you’ve visited www.delawarelibrary.org/event lately, you might have seen lots of yoga programs popping up at the Delaware County District Library. Each branch has its own variety of yoga programs, but one program in particular has caught the attention of the adult yoga novice. “Gentle Yoga” is being taught weekly on Mondays in March at 7 p.m. at the Orange branch library.

Orange branch manager Julie Standish, who is also a certified yoga instructor, leads these classes, which are created for beginners to learn the basics of developing and incorporating a yoga and meditation practice in their lives. Class participants should wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to relax and enjoy themselves.

So why does yoga make sense in a library environment? Huffington Post writer Rob Schware put it best in his column: “Libraries are cornerstones of the community. They have wonderful spaces. They’re approachable and need a variety of programs. Libraries are the keepers of knowledge, so why shouldn’t that knowledge base include yoga and wellness?”

Once you relax your mind and body, you can practice your poses at home while watching these new DVD releases:

• “The Big Short.” When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything.

• “Brooklyn.” Tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

• “The Peanuts Movie.” Snoopy, the world’s most lovable beagle — and flying ace — embarks upon his greatest mission as he takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis The Red Baron, while his best pal, Charlie Brown, begins his own epic quest.

• “Victor Frankenstein.” Radical scientist Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy) and his trusted assistant Igor (Daniel Radcliffe) share a noble vision of aiding humanity through their groundbreaking research into immortality. But when Victor’s experiments go too far, his obsession has terrifying consequences, and now only Igor can bring his friend back from the brink of madness.

• “In the Heart of the Sea.” In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance.

• “Room.” After 5-year-old Jack and his Ma escape from the enclosed surroundings that Jack has known his entire life, the boy makes a thrilling discovery: the outside world.
