Nicole Fowles: ‘Books and Brews’ clubs mix discussion, drinks

At the Delaware County District Library, we have six traditional book clubs that meet inside the four library branches, but we also have two non-traditional clubs that meet outside the library walls. “Books and Brews” is a book club for those who enjoy some social camaraderie and libations with their books.

DCDL has two Books and Brews clubs that meet in our Powell and Delaware communities. They discuss a range of titles for all interest levels, and they encourage you to enjoy the offerings of the businesses where they meet.

This month, the Delaware Book and Brews club will meet on Monday, May 9, at 7 p.m. in Barley Hopsters, 1 N. Sandusky St. They’re discussing Ken Kesey’s classic “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Other titles you can look forward to seeing from the Delaware Books and Brews over the summer include “Paper Towns” by John Green, “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed and – my personal favorite – “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline.

The Powell Books and Brews group meets at the Powell location of The Daily Growler, 258 W. Olentangy St. This month they meet on Wednesday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m. and will discuss Emma Donoghue’s “Room.” If you’re closer to the Powell area, you can join them in June to discuss “In a Dark, Dark Wood” by Ruth Ware, or in August for “Everything I Never Told You” by Celeste Ng.

Attending book clubs is always free, but your purchases at the establishments are on you. As always, you can find all the titles at your local DCDL branch or online at www.delawarelibrary.org. Have fun, and imbibe wisely! Here are descriptions of the titles being discussed:

• “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” by Ken Kesey. McMurphy, a criminal who feigns insanity, is admitted to a mental hospital where he challenges the autocratic authority of the head nurse.

• “Room” by Emma Donoghue. A 5-year-old narrates a story about his life growing up in a single room where his mother aims to protect him from the man who has held her prisoner since she was a teenager.

• “Paper Towns” by John Green. High school senior Quentin “Q” Jacobsen basks in the predictable boringness of his life until his neighbor and classmate takes him on a midnight adventure and then disappears.

• “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. A powerful, blazingly honest, inspiring memoir: the story of a 1,100-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe — and built her back up again.

• “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline. Immersing himself in a mid-21st-century technological virtual utopia to escape an ugly real world, Wade Watts joins an effort to solve a series of puzzles by the virtual world’s creator.

• “In a Dark, Dark Wood” by Ruth Ware. Accepting an old friend’s invitation to spend a weekend in the countryside, writer Leonora awakens in a hospital badly injured, unable to recall what happened.

• “Everything I Never Told You” by Celeste Ng. A story of cultural divisions and family rifts explores the fallout of the drowning death of Lydia Lee, the daughter of a Chinese-American family in 1970s Ohio.
