If you’ve ever had a child play with your cellphone, you probably quickly realized that it only takes him touching a few wrong buttons and suddenly your phone is in German and you’ve got a new lock password on your homescreen.

Similarly, in the Delaware County District Library children’s department, the educational iPads were frequent victims of a language change, a screen color shift, or a locked app. After some testing, our IT department determined that the iPads weren’t best suited for young children, and they were moved to an area designated for “tweens” – kids in the 9-11 age range.

Now occupying the location where the iPads were are “Playaway Launchpads” for younger users. These secure, pre-loaded learning tablets are created especially for children in a library environment. Each Launchpad has a fun theme with 10 or more educational apps already on it. Kids can pick up the truck theme and then play in the “Construction Alphabet” app, or any of the other choices available at the branch.

Launchpads are now available at all four of our library locations, and we’ve already heard many positive comments from our users, and their parents. Next time you’re in your home branch, swing by the children’s area and look for the tablets with the orange cases. You might have picked up the princess theme, the dinosaur theme, or another fun choice. The Launchpads will rotate throughout the branches so children get an opportunity to try all the themes over time.

While the kids learn and play on the Launchpads, you can take a stroll through the DVD section and see what’s new on the shelves this month:

• “Meadowland.” In the hazy aftermath of an unimaginable loss, couple Sarah (Olivia Wilde) and Phil (Luke Wilson) come unhinged, recklessly ignoring the repercussions.

• “Our Brand is Crisis.” A Bolivian presidential candidate failing in the polls enlists the firepower of an elite American management team, led by the deeply damaged but still brilliant strategist Jane Bodine (Sandra Bullock).

• “Truth.” A riveting true story of one of network news’ biggest scandals, featuring Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett.
