Letter to the editor: Schools’ ‘substitute levy is not a tax increase’

0

To the editor:

The League of Women Voters of Delaware County urges voters of the Delaware City School District to vote “yes” for the proposed tax levy on March 15.

This substitute levy is not a tax increase and replaces a current levy approved by the voters in 2011. This levy represents about 11 percent of the school district’s operating budget.

We like this levy because it allows the district to collect revenue from new development within its boundaries. New houses bring in additional students.

We feel that the Delaware City School District and its leaders are being responsible in planning to accommodate a growing student population and maintaining existing programs. Your “yes” vote is not a vote to increase taxes.
