‘If you are like me, you hate to see anything wasted’

To the editor:

I’m sure there are a lot of people who are always looking for ways to save money. I’m sure, also, that a lot of those people have children in school and have to buy school supplies for one or more child every year.

If you are like me, you hate to see anything wasted. If I can’t use it, there may be someone else who would be very happy to get it. I learned, quite by accident, of the large amount of waste that happens at the end of the school year, of all the things that go into the dumpsters.

This list includes hundreds of pencils, colored pencils, crayons (unused), erasers, calculators, paper, books (!), teaching aids — the list goes on. I wonder how many moms and dads would be thrilled to have a central location where the items could be distributed at no cost to them.

Someone could be in charge of this distribution, just as with the Christmas clearinghouse.

It will be hard for me to vote for another tax levy, knowing about this issue.
