Letter to the editor: ‘An unpatriotic and disrespectful gesture’

To the editor:

So sad that the Confederate battle flag would appear at Delaware’s July 4 parade.

In the 1860s, it represented armed insurrection against the United States, then resurfaced in the 1950s as a symbol of Southern racist backlash against the civil rights movement.

Displaying this flag is both an unpatriotic and disrespectful gesture against our nation and an insult to Americans of every race.

As a nation, we need to work on unifying rather than dividing. The flag of the United States of America should be the only one visible on such a special day.
