Letter to the editor: ‘The original symbolism of the flag’

0

To the editor:

Concerning the Confederate battle flag, it is unfortunately true it’s been associated with hate groups. This seriously dilutes the original symbolism of the flag which, at the time, stood for separation from a nation the Southern states believed to be oppressive and unresponsive to their rights in many areas.

Whatever your thoughts, the Southern people were honorable and stood for high moral principles and integrity. Slavery was very likely on its way out down South, even then.

Please separate the offensive way some people use the flag today and its historical reality. And please remember that many who do display the flag today do so from a position of heritage, not hate.

P.S. The American flag is the appropriate flag to be flown at a July 4 celebration.
