Cody Coughlin headed to Indy

Cody Coughlin’s family is full of straight-line racers, but the 19-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing development driver plans to go in circles this Friday night in the Circle City.

Coughlin is returning to the ARCA/CRA Super Series with his yellow No. 1 Team JEGS Toyota for his fourth start of the season. This time the 19-year-old will tackle Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis. The flat short track sits in the shadows of the most famous racing facility in the world, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Because of that, it doesn’t matter what track in which the win comes, a win in the city of Indianapolis is as special as it gets.

“Going to Indianapolis is a lot of fun,” Coughlin said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s watching a race at the Brickyard, or racing at Lucas Oil Raceway, it’s just a fun place to go to. But it’s also a place I really want to win at. We’ve come close before, but now I want to break through and take that checkered flag.”

The Coughlin family has won the granddaddy of all drag races, NHRA’s U.S. Nationals at the same facility, but no Coughlin has ever graced victory lane on the circle track.

Coughlin finished second at the facility in a JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour race during his championship year in 2013. He hasn’t raced much at the track since, but he’s confident that he can get around the tricky, flat 0.686-mile oval better than anyone.

“I know I have what it takes to win there,” said Coughlin. “I know that my crew chief, Nick Easton, will give me what I need to be fast, and my spotter, Scott Wimmer, will guide me through any messes I may encounter. And with the help of Kevin Hamlin and Dave Holt, and the love and support of my dad, John, my mother, Di, and my little sister, Kennedi, I know we’re in for a good day.”

Coughlin will get on track for the Circle City 100 for the first time at 12:45 p.m. Friday for the first round of practice. Qualifying will take place at 4:30 p.m. with the Circle City 100 set to take the green flag at 7 p.m.
