Winning a state championship is hard.

Winning back-to-back state titles is even harder … but it’s exactly what Olentangy Liberty sophomores Danielle Schoenly and Maddie Atway were able to do at the Division I girls state tennis tournament Friday and Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

The duo go things started with a 6-4, 6-1 win over North Canton Hoover’s Hallie Hunt and Katie Harcourt before securing a spot in Saturday’s championship semifinals with an equally impressive 6-4, 6-2 quarterfinal win over St. Ursula Academy’s Bella Kirby and Gabby Gockerman.

Schoenly and Atway were even more dominant as the competition ramped up, punching a ticket to the final with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win over Mason’s Raina Chada and Annie Kruse.

They played Mayfield’s Hannah Kassaie and Caitlyn Hsu in the final, bringing home their second title in as many years with a 6-2, 6-3 win.

Olentangy Orange’s doubles duo of Kortney Reed and Erin Storrer and Liberty’s other team of Lexie Brengartner and Ellie MacDowell were also in action.

Reed and Storrer won their opener over Perrysburg’s Gemma Smith and Kyleigh Henthorn by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 margin before falling to Kassaie and Hsu 3-6, 0-6 in the quarters.

Brengartner and MacDowell, meanwhile, fell to Perrysburg’s Emma Carter and Sydney Onest 3-6, 2-6 in the first round.
