Two days. Two pitchers. No hits.
In a game that took parts of two days to play, Ben Atiyeh and Zach Mitchell combined to toss a no-hitter as the Buckeye Valley baseball team rolled to an 11-0, five-inning win over host Shelby Thursday afternoon.
Atiyeh did most of the heavy lifting, firing four innings of no-hit ball before rain suspended things on Wednesday. When play resumed Thursday, Mitchell sealed the deal, striking out a pair as part of a 1-2-3 fifth.
The Barons took control in the third, breaking a scoreless tie with five runs. They added four more in the fourth before the rains came and scored two in the fifth to end things soon after they started up again.
Fletcher Holquist led BV at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with five RBI and a pair of runs scored. Atiyeh helped his cause from the dish as well, finishing 2-for-3 with a triple and four knocked in.
Olentangy Liberty 6, Olentangy Orange 5, 9 inn.
After playing 8.5 innings before rain suspended things Wednesday, it took the Patriots just half an inning to end it Thursday afternoon in Powell.
With the game tied at five when play resumed in the bottom of the ninth, Michael Atkinson, the first batter of the inning, reached on an error to get Liberty started. After a strikeout, Brennan Rowe was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second.
With AJ Rausch at the plate, Atkinson advanced to third on a passed ball and, two pitches later, scored on a fielder’s choice.
The Pioneers tried to turn two, but Rausch beat the throw to first to seal the deal.
With the win, Liberty moved into a first-place tie with Orange with four league games left. Both are 9-2 in OCC play.
Westerville North 4, Olentangy Berlin 3
The Bears scored a run in the top of the seventh to take a 3-1 lead, but the host Warriors plated three in their final trip to the dish to earn a walk-off win Thursday in Westerville.
Jacob Lewis led Berlin with three hits while Mitch Herbst and Chris Nash had two apiece.
Central Crossing 2, Delaware Hayes 1
The Pacers’ Ryan Murphy didn’t allow a hit until the seventh, but the host Comets made the two they got in their final at-bat count en route to a non-league win Thursday afternoon.
Hayes’ lone run came when Brennan Helcher doubled home Drew Williams in the second.
Westerville South 11, Olentangy 10, 10 inn.
The visiting Wildcats scored a run in the top of the 10th and made it stand up to notch a league win over the Braves Thursday in Lewis Center.
Westerville South scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to even things 6-6. It added two more in the eighth, but Olentangy answered with two of its own. The Wildcats scored another two in the ninth, but again, the Braves scored two of their own to stay alive. The run in the 10th, though, proved to be the difference.
Caden Kaiser led Olentangy with four hits while Connor Haag had a game-high four RBI in the setback.
BOYS LACROSSE
Olentangy Berlin picked up its first win in program history Thursday, edging host Hilliard Bradley 14-13.
Jack Nebraska led the charge with six goals and three assists while Gavin Angell had three goals and three assists in the win.
Sam Warner anchored the defense with 20 saves in the Bears’ goal.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Llwyatt Hofer had a team-best 11 kills, Sean McCabe had 28 assists and 16 digs and Cole Young chipped in five blocks to lead Olentangy Liberty to a three-set win over visiting Pickerington Central Thursday in Powell.
The Patriots won the first set 25-15 before taking the last two by respective scores of 25-18 and 26-24.
