Orofino leads Liberty at sectional showcase

Holden Orofino fired a 72 to nab medalist honors and lead the Olentangy Liberty boys golf team to a second-place showing at Tuesday’s Division I sectional tournament at Turnberry.

Orofino was consistent, carding a 36 on the front nine and a 36 on the back. The Patriots, who also got strong rounds from Jackson Harris (77), Carson Meyer (81) and Noah Andry (81), finished with a team total of 311.

Hilliard Davison took top honors with a 309 while Grove City, which nabbed the third and final district qualification, rounded out the top three with a 319.

Olentangy and Olentangy Berlin competed as well, finishing sixth and 11th with respective rounds of 329 and 354.

John McClelland was the only Brave to finish in the 70s, closing with a team-leading 78. The Bears, meanwhile, got a team-best 85 from Justin Sweeney.

Darby Creek Sectional

Tyler Goetzman and Ethan Krebs fired rounds in the mid-70s to lead Big Walnut to a third-place finish at a Division I sectional tournament Tuesday afternoon at Darby Creek.

Goetzman finished with a 74 while Krebs had a 77 for the Golden Eagles, who punched a ticked to the upcoming district showcase with a combined 316. Other BW contributors included Logan Grieser (80) and Nathan Tripp (85).

Dublin Coffman won the sectional title with a 298 while St. Charles nabbed runner-up honors with a 309.

Olentangy Orange was also in action, finishing sixth among the 14 teams in action with a combined 336. Max Garske led the Pioneers with an 80 while Ryan Ruggieri had an 84, Andrew Lowery finished with an 85 and Colin Dustin rounded out the team’s top four with an 87.

GIRLS GOLF

Olentangy carded a combined 309 to collect a Division I sectional title Tuesday afternoon at Oakhaven. Olentangy Orange was second with a 334.

Freshman Meadow Tian led the charge for the Braves, as she has all season, with a 73. Olentangy also got steady showings from Olivia Drankwalter and Kimmy Archer, who both fired 78s; and Navisha Soni, who had an 80 when all was said and done.

Pickaway Sectional

Olentangy Liberty will be joining Olentangy at the upcoming district tournament, finishing third at Tuesday’s Division I sectional tournament at Pickaway Country Club.

The Patriots, who carded a combined 359, were led by Dakota Riley (86), Olivia Aronhalt (86), Mia Chanthasene (93) and Kennedy Elfers (94).

GIRLS SOCCER

Aubrey Griner and Sara Dudley scored two goals apiece to lead Delaware Hayes to a dominant 6-2 non-league win over visiting Newark Tuesday night.

Kendal Philibin and Claire Stein also found the back of the net while Cali Kent finished with five saves in the Pacer goal.

Also: Big Walnut 2, Thomas Worthington 1.
