Consistent Patriots nab runner-up honors at Chapel Hill

All six Patriots who made the trip shot 75 or better as Liberty’s boys golf team used a balanced effort to nab runner-up honors at the Mount Vernon Classic Friday at Chapel Hill.

Led by Kyle Mitchell’s 72, Liberty finished with a combined 288 — a mark just five strokes behind the champs from St. Xavier. Trey Rath (73), Cameron McCloskey (74), Brandon Foth (74) Ronnie Foth (74) and Jon Flees (75) also contributed.

Olentangy finished tied for 12th thanks to solid rounds from Matthew Homza (76), Eric Dop (77), Nick Scott (78) and Garrett Varanelli (79); and Orange finished 15th among the 22 teams in action with steady contributions from Alex Cabungcal (77), Zach Mahon (80), Spencer Gifford (81) and John Mikulec (82).

Girls Tennis

Liberty’s girls tennis team was sharp in its season opener, cruising past visiting Chaminade-Julienne 5-0 Friday in Powell.

Singles winners included the Patriots’ Alexia Meyer, who beat Brianna Douglas 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 at first singles; Alexis Steer, who handled Kat Dranchak 6-1, 6-0 at second singles; and Sidney Reineke, who defeated Olivia Hoff 6-0, 6-1 at third singles.

Anna Delaney and Cellini Ko beat Alexis Robinson and Amanda Draeger 6-3, 6-1 at first doubles and Avivah Wang and Lizzie Radkiewicz completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Olivia Boch and Lydia Bice at second doubles.
