Raines fires 71, breaks Midwest Classic record

Olentangy freshman Leila Raines put together her best round of the season Saturday, swinging her way to a Midwest Classic (Ohio Division) record with a medal-winning 71.

Kara Raines also authored a top-10 showing, firing an 83 to boost the Braves’ girls golf team to a second-place finish. Olentangy closed with a combined 346.

Orange also competed in the event, finishing with a 349. Ashley Au led the Pioneers with a 78.

BOYS GOLF

The Olentangy boys golf team carded a solid 313 Saturday at Hiawatha — a mark good enough to earn it runner-up honors at the Kent Miller Invitational.

Garrett Varanelli led the Braves, firing a 73. Matthew Homza (78), Ben Nash (78), Cameron Casto (84) and Garrett Leckrone (85) also contributed.

Big Walnut also had a strong showing, finishing fifth among the 19 teams in action with a combined 318. Austin Schone paced the Golden Eagles, finishing third among the 95 individual golfers with a 72. Parker Imertreijs also shot in the 70s, finishing with a 79. Other BW contributors included Nick Dimitroff (80), Henry von Hollen (87) and Michael Ford (89).

The Pacers competed in the event too, finishing with a team total of 357. Jake Ross and Sam Bonofiglio led the Pacers with 87s while David Kelly (91), Logan Keeder (92) and Luke Gazarek (94) rounded out the team’s top five.
