Davies boosts Barons in 1st game back

Trent Davies did a little of everything in his first game on the field since transferring from Olentangy Liberty, scoring a pair of touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground, to lead Buckeye Valley to a 39-12 non-league win over Whetstone Friday in Columbus.

Davies, who sat out Week 1 against Hayes, was cleared to play just two hours before kickoff. Two hours after kickoff, the junior was the Barons’ leading rusher (20 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown) and leading receiver (three grabs for 28 yards and a touchdown).

He made his mark almost immediately, scoring on a five-yard touchdown run to get the Barons (1-1) on the board with 2:01 left in the first quarter.

Buckeye Valley took control in the second thanks to a dominant display by the defense. After blanking Whetstone for the first 10-plus minutes of the period, Teren Wycoff recovered a fumble in the end zone to put his team up 19-6.

Chris Santillan accounted for the Barons’ other second-quarter score, hauling in a 13-yard TD pass from quarterback Ben Spaulding to put BV up 13-6 less than a minute before Wycoff’s recovery.

The second half featured more of the same as Spaulding scored on a 16-yard run with 4:33 left in the third quarter before the Barons outscored the Braves 13-0 in the fourth to smooth out the scoring summary.

Spaulding hit Davies for an 11-yard scoring strike with 11:09 left in the game before sprinting into the end zone himself with 5:38 to play.

Spaulding finished with three total touchdowns. He completed 10 of his 17 passes for 89 yards and carried the ball 18 times for 48.

Next up, Buckeye Valley will take on host Johnstown-Monroe Friday at 7 p.m.
