Barons win, set up rematch with Alder

Last time the Buckeye Valley and Jonathan Alder girls soccer teams tangled, an MOAC-Red Division title was on the line.

The Barons lost that day, falling 4-2 back on Sept. 19 in Plain City, but, thanks to a 3-0 win over visiting Liberty Union in Wednesday’s Division II sectional final, they’ll get another crack at the Pioneers in next week’s district semifinal.

“They’re just looking forward to a rematch with Alder,” BV coach Lucy Schmitt said. “(Keys will be) controlling the midfield, managing our emotions and getting some penetration in their defense. We must get more scoring opportunities than last time.”

Sixth-seeded Buckeye Valley didn’t have any trouble creating scoring chances against 14th-seeded Liberty Union. Selina Seliskar scored off a feed from Hanna Fenstermaker, Gabrielle Legg found the back of the net off a pass from Ellen Riley and Hannah Cowan cashed in an assist from Allie Coburn to account for the final margin.

The defense did its part, too, preventing Liberty Union from getting off a single shot on goal.

Second-seeded Jonathan Alder, which punched its ticket to the district semis with a 7-0 win over London, will host the rematch, which is set to get underway at Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Golden Eagles scored three goals in the last 20 minutes of the second half to pull away for a convincing Division II sectional final win Wednesday in Sunbury.

Big Walnut goal scorers included Emma Padgett, Adelee Gartner, Bailey Bodker and Madison Aleshire.

Jordan Foxworthy, meanwhile, anchored the defense with six saves in goal.

Next up, the third-seeded Golden Eagles will host either seventh-seeded Bexley or 15th-seeded Highland in next Wednesday’s district semifinal.

VOLLEYBALL

Olivia Margolies finished with 10 kills, 11 digs and two blocks to lead Olentangy to a three-set win over visiting Lancaster in Wednesday’s Division I sectional final in Lewis Center.

The Braves won the first set 25-17 before sealing the deal with wins of 25-21 and 25-15 in the second and third, respectively.

Other Olentangy standouts included Emily Magolies, who finished with nine kills; Lexie Weithman, who chipped in 14 digs and four aces; and Madyson Chitty, who closed with 11 digs.

With the win, the seventh-seeded Braves advance to Tuesday’s district semifinal against third-seeded Gahanna. The match will be played at Franklin Heights.
