Orsini sets school record in win at DePauw

Staff Report

Senior quarterback Dominick Orsini (Massillon/Archbishop Hoban) set a school record for total offense, including the second-highest single-game rushing performance in school history, and the Ohio Wesleyan defense blanked DePauw during the second half as the Bishops defeated the Tigers 37-15 in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday in Greencastle, Ind.

Orsini ran for 252 yards on 25 carries, scoring on touchdown runs of 37, 7, and 4 yards. The 252 yards ranks second on the Ohio Wesleyan single-game list, trailing only a 280-yard performance by James Rike against Western Reserve on Nov. 24, 1906. Orsini also completed 20 of 32 passes for 242 yards and a score. His 494 yards in total offense broke the school record of 484 yards set by Mason Espinosa against Hiram on Nov. 13, 2010.

After forcing a punt on the opening possession of the game, the Bishops took over on their own 32-yard line. Orsini ran for 11 yards to pick up one first down, then found senior wide receiver Ross Hickenbottom (West Liberty/West Liberty-Salem) for 10 yards and another first down. Facing fourth-and-2 at the DePauw 37, Orsini broke free and covered the final 37 yards himself to put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard.

Later in the first quarter, Orsini moved the Bishops into Tiger territory with a 46-yard scamper, and after a pair of completions to senior wide receiver Cheyne Lacanaria (Farmington, Mich./Brother Rice), picked up 23 yards to move Ohio Wesleyan into the red zone. On the next play, Orsini hit senior wide receiver Tyler DeVitis (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) on a 15-yard scoring play to cap an 82-yard, 5-play drive.

DePauw marched to a first-and-goal at the Ohio Wesleyan 1-yard line on its next possession, but a personal foul moved the Tigers back to the OWU 16. On third-and-goal from the 2-yard line, Jason Kirchhoff was stopped short of the goal line by junior safety Ben Rubel (Toledo/St. John’s) and senior defensive tackle Beau Michel (Seffner, Fla./Armwood), and on fourth down from the OWU 1, Marko Adams converted an 18-yard field goal try to put DePauw on the scoreboard.

The Tigers would take the lead as Matt Hunt connected with Andy Hunt on touchdown passes covering 42 and 3 yards, but Adams missed both point-after kicks to leave DePauw ahead, 15-14, with 3:21 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan would answer with a strike from Orsini to sophomore running back Jesse Beachy (Plain City/Jonathan Alder), who found the right sideline and picked up 75 yards to set up a 7-yard Orsini run. Senior wide receiver Tim Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) came on to kick the extra point for a 21-15 Bishop lead at the break.

Freshman running back Alex Barrett (Kingston, Wash.) scored on a 19-yard run in the third quarter and Orsini went over from 4 yards out in early in the fourth quarter, stretching the Bishop lead to 34-15, and Shadoan came on for a 28-yard field goal for the 37-15 final.

Lacanaria, Hickenbottom, and Shadoan each caught 4 passes for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior defensive end Gary Brodek (Parma/Valley Forge) led the Bishops with 9 tackles and a pass breakup.

Matt Hunt completed 17 of 33 passes for 134 yards and 2 scores, and ran for 121 yards on 14 carries. Andy Hunt had 7 receptions for 83 yards. Will Longthorne led the Tigers with 12 tackles, including 1 for loss.
