Pacer girls earn OCC championship


Hayes, Big Walnut boys claim runner-up honors

Things went swimmingly for the Delaware Hayes girls swim team over the weekend as the Pacers, well, swam their way to their first league championship since 2004 at the OCC-Cardinal Division Championships Saturday in Worthington.

Hayes took top honors with 309 points while Dublin Jerome and Thomas Worthington smoothed out the top three with respective totals of 246 and 217.

“It was a great morning for the Pacers,” Hayes coach Bill Rietz said. “The staff was anxious about our potential team performance, but the swimmers and divers committed to each event and supported one another … this is a great team result.”

Hayes winners included Brooke Glesenkamp, who won the 50 and 100 freestyles in 24.59 and 53.34 seconds, respectively; Kristen Puthoff, who won the 200 free in 1:58.32; and Danielle Ward, who took top honors in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.77.

The Pacers also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays in respective times of 1:41.22 and 3:43.78.

OCC-Capital Championships

Big Walnut finished third at Friday and Saturday’s OCC championship meet in New Albany, closing with 130 points.

The Golden Eagles got their two top-three showings in the relay events, finishing third in the 400 freestyle relay (4:43.23) and 200 medley relay (2:24.64).

Also: Liberty 1st at OCC-Buckeye Division Championships.

BOYS SWIMMING

OCC-Cardinal Championships

Hayes was solid throughout the weekend’s OCC-Cardinal Division Championships in Worthington, finishing second with 209 points.

The Pacers padded their point total with a stellar showing during Friday’s diving event, claiming the top two spots. Sam Sulek took top honors with a score of 332.15 and Kyle Klumpp finished second with 328.75.

Craig Klumpp nailed down a top-three finish during Saturday’s swimming events, closing third in the 200 individual medley in 2:10.04.

Hayes’ best finish in the pool, meanwhile, came in the relays, where the 200 freestyle relay team finished second in 1:34.05.

OCC-Capital Championships

Big Walnut finished second with 285 points at Friday and Saturday’s OCC championship meet in New Albany.

Dominic Carifa and Wesley Hammond won individual titles, taking top honors in the 100 and 200 freestyles in 50.99 seconds and 1:49.85.

Hammond was also solid in the 500 freestyle, nabbing runner-up honors in 4:57.64.

Other top BW performances belonged to the 200 medley relay team, which picked up first-place points in 1:51.74; and the quartet of Nick Dimitroff, Colin White, Nate Dimitroff and Zach MacDonald, who took the top four spots in the diving competition.

Also: Liberty 1st at OCC-Buckeye Division Championships.
