Olentangy Liberty’s Maddie Atway and Danielle Schoenly set the bar pretty high in their first career OHSAA Girls State Tennis Tournament.

The freshmen teamed up to win a state doubles title Friday and Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason Ohio, knocking off Cincinnati Ursline Academy’s Nina Dhaliwal and Gabriella O’Connor 6-1, 7-6 (6) in the championship match.

The duo won all four of their matches in two sets. The most competitive came in the first round, when they held off Mason’s Sanjana Reddy and Nicole Reid 7-5, 7-6 (3). They then beat Green’s Anne Zivick and Maria Zivick 6-3, 6-4 in the second round and Rocky River Magnificat’s Alexandra Vesikallio and Olivia Rondini 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinal to punch a ticket to the championship showdown.

The Patriots’ Cellini Ko and Alexis Steer, a pair of seniors, were also in action. They took on Vesikallio and Rondini, the eventual third-place team, in the first round, falling 2-6, 0-6.

Olentangy senior Kathleen Jones competed in singles action, splitting her two matches. The district champ won her opener 6-0, 7-5 over Perrysburg’s Emma Carter before falling to Mason’s Ananya Aggarwal 0-6, 6-7 (5).
