For residents in any city, requests for new food options are never-ending. Delaware residents should soon be adding another option to their eatery menu as the City of Delaware Planning Commission approved a combined preliminary and final development plan Wednesday for a Raising Cane’s restaurant.
If approved by Delaware City Council, the eatery would be constructed in the Glennwood Commons shopping center in an outlot located at the southeast corner of Sunbury Road and Mill Run Crossing.
Members of the planning commission voted unanimously to approve the development plan. The site will encompass 1.48 acres of land, and the restaurant itself will be approximately 3,290 square feet. Unlike the Powell location, the Delaware restaurant will include covered patio space for outdoor eating.
“I’ve heard from the community a lot. They’ve been waiting for a restaurant — sit-down, fast food, and everything in between — particularly at this location,” Planning and Community Development Director Dave Efland said.
During Wednesday’s meeting, planning commission members heard from Drew Gatliff, predevelopment manager for Raising Cane’s Ohio.
Efland told Gatliff, “We’re appreciative of you working with us and your interest in the city of Delaware.”
Efland went on to say Raising Cane’s has been one of the specific restaurants he’s heard many people asking to bring into Delaware, and he expects Delaware residents to be happy and excited to have Cane’s in the city.
There is not yet a timetable for when construction of the restaurant will be completed.
Raising Cane’s was started by Todd Graves in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on the campus of Louisiana State University in 1996. The restaurant is known for its overly simple menu that includes only one main option: chicken strips. The made-to-order fried tenderloins are served with crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, and their tangy signature sauce that is a blend of ketchup, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce and spices.
The name of the restaurant stems from Graves’ dog, a Golden Retriever named Raising Cane, who often was around the construction site during the building of the first restaurant. Now, the company has more than 400 stores across the country and even the world, with locations in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon.
