Authorities: 2nd person dies following Michigan house fire

MONROE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a 70-year-old man has died of injuries following a house fire in southeastern Michigan that also claimed the life of his 18-year-old grandson.

The Monroe County sheriff’s department says Ruben Castorena had serious burns following the Tuesday fire in Monroe Township. He was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Toledo, Ohio, where the department says he was pronounced dead on Wednesday night.

The department says Alex Johnson’s body was found inside the home after crews responded on Tuesday. Several other people got out of the home, including a 74-year-old woman and a 42-year-old woman who were last listed in stable condition.

Smoke detectors alerted the family to the fire and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Authorities say it may have started in the living room.
