Block party planned for Saturday in Delaware

Staff Report

The Chi Phi Fraternity is inviting the Northwest Neighborhood to join in for a “Community Harvest Festival” block party scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, from noon to 4 p.m.

In an effort to strengthen the feeling of community and create bonds of fellowship among the wide variety of neighbors that call the northwest neighborhood home, the Chi Phi Fraternity — in cooperation with Asbury United Methodist Church, the Women’s City Club and the Northwest Neighborhood Association — are coordinating a neighborhood block party, organizers say.

“I love this neighborhood,” says Truman Haycock, festival coordinator. “I grew up in Delaware and attended Asbury church, and now I call OWU (Ohio Wesleyan University) and Chi Phi Fraternity home. Chi Phi wants to give back to the community that has done so much for our home and members over the years. We want to say ‘thank you’ in a thoughtful way that helps our community grow and is a lot of fun.”

The block party will be held in the parking lot of Asbury United Methodist Church, the Chi Phi Fraternity grounds and in Franklin Street between Griswold and Lincoln, which will be blocked for the event.

For children, there will be cornhole games, face-painting, arts and crafts, and scarecrow making. For adults, historical tours of the neighborhood, fraternity house and Asbury church are planned. Several food vendors will be on hand. Tables and chairs will be in the Asbury parking lot. The fraternity will be serving hot chocolate and coffee.

Neighbors are invited to bring their families, something to drink and a folding chair.

The Northwest Neighborhood is situated in the northwest quadrant of the city of Delaware, bound by West William Street to the south, the Olentangy River to the east, Pennsylvania Avenue to the north, and Euclid Avenue to the west. The Northwest Historic District was listed on the National Historic Register in 1996 and includes more than 200 contributing structures.
