Sheriff’s office warns of burglaries after series in northern Delaware County

After a series of burglaries in northern Delaware County, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

The sheriff’s office reports that in the last couple of weeks homes on several roads in Delaware County, including Kelly-McMaster Road and Leonardsburg Road, have all been burglarized.

At this point, officials believe the crimes are connected and believe the burglaries were likely committed by the same persons or group.

No arrests have yet been made but the investigation is ongoing.

In the meantime, the sheriff’s office is advising residents to keep their porch lights on at night and to look out for their neighbors.

Residents wishing to report any suspicious activities or other information related to the burglaries can contact the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office at 740-833-2800, or 911. Residents can also call the office’s detective bureau at 740-833-2866.

“We don’t mind if it appears to be nothing; sometimes those calls help us connect the dots and potentially identify suspects,” said Tracy Whited, head of community and media relations at the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office suggested following a few of the following tips to decrease the chance of a burglary:

· Be aware of your surroundings.

· Lock your doors, windows, vehicles. Theft/burglaries may still occur, but it slows the criminal down – and most prefer a quick and convenient theft.

· Leave your porch/house exterior lights on at night.

· Talk with your neighbors, form a block watch, look out for one another.

· Surveillance cameras can be a deterrent, but often help more with apprehension.

· Don’t advertise large new purchases, such as a large-flat screen TV box lying on the street corner for recycling pickup.
