Chalk contest postponed, First Friday still on

Due to wet sidewalks and rain in the forecast this afternoon, Main Street Delaware’s sidewalk chalk contest for this evening will be postponed to August’s First Friday, taking place on Aug. 4.

But the July First Friday is still on and will keep its “Christmas in July” theme.

Sponsored by Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Delaware, streets will now remain open for the evening and vendors will set up on the sidewalk, dressed in their Santa Claus hats and jingle bells to celebrate.

Several ho-ho-holiday themes are also being tossed around inside our downtown retail and restaurant establishments. Stop by and visit them until 9 p.m. this evening to see what they’re featuring.

At 9:30 p.m. a special adult late-night screening of the movie “Home Alone” will take place at the Strand Theatre. The movie will be preceded by a trivia contest and hilarious prizes. The movie screening is sponsored by RE/MAX Allegiance Stephanie Cashman. Tickets are $5 and include a box of Strand popcorn.

The “Christmas in July” theme will raise awareness about the nonprofit organization’s Christmas plans in Delaware this year.

With input from residents, merchants, city representatives, and others, Main Street will debut a new ‘Home for the Holidays’ weekend in December. The entire first weekend of that month will have festivities to kick-off the holiday season.

The weekend will starting with the December First Friday when Santa comes to town to light the tree, continuing with the Holiday Open House on Saturday, and then wrapping up with a new date for the annual Christmas parade on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 3 p.m.
