The Olentangy Orange girls tennis team picked up a solid season-opening win Thursday in Lewis Center, blanking visiting Big Walnut 5-0.

The Pioneers may be young, but they certainly didn’t play like an inexperienced group against the Golden Eagles. Freshman Erin Storrer nailed down a solid 6-2, 6-1 win over BW’s Macie Kercsmar at first singles, freshman Kortney Reed cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles and sophomore Livie Mauger won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at third singles.

Almost all of Orange’s experience was on the first doubles court, where seniors Mary Damko and Izzy Prislusky teamed up to notch a 6-1, 6-0 win. At second doubles, meanwhile, freshmen Abby Butler and Hannah Logan beat Maria Boyer and Anna Faust 6-1, 6-3 to smooth out the scoring summary.

Upper Sandusky 5, Buckeye Valley 0

Alexis Poulton lost a heartbreaker at first singles as the Barons lost their opener to a solid Upper Sandusky squad Thursday afternoon.

After dropping the first set 4-6, Poulton stormed back to take the second 6-3. The momentum didn’t carry over to the tiebreaker, though, where she fell by a slim 8-10 margin.

Other Barons who saw action included Julie Sparks, who fell 0-6, 2-6 at second singles; Robin Wilson, who lost 1-6, 2-6 at third singles; Sabrina Mullins and Gianna Garnett, who dropped a 0-6, 0-6 match at first doubles; and Fiona Tsang and Alex Margraff, who lost 0-6, 1-6 at second doubles.

FROM WEDNESDAY

The Pacers battled, but couldn’t crack the win column during Wednesday’s non-league match against host Jonathan Alder.

Hayes’ most competitive match came at first doubles, where the duo of Emily Miklas and Ericka Johnson won the first set 6-4 before dropping the next two by scores of 5-7 and 3-6.

In other action, the Pacers’ Grace Brinkmoeller fell 0-6, 1-6 at first singles, Paris Knipp lost 0-6, 2-6 at second singles, Renae Haferman dropped a 4-6, 2-6 showdown at third singles and Emmaline Riggs and Bridget Johnson fell 3-6, 0-6 in their first varsity match.
