The Buckeye Valley boys tennis team has come a long way since fourth-year coach Laura Pappa took control of the program.

“The freshman class when I started (Nick Baesman, Mitchell Garnett, Nick Roden and Ben Swanger) are now seniors leading the team,” Pappa said. “It’s very cool to see how they’ve developed as tennis players and leaders off the court. Jake Kehoe joined us his sophomore year, and he’s also grown his game immensely.”

That development was on display in Monday’s season opener as BV picked up wins on all five courts against visiting Marysville.

Singles winners included Roden (7-5, 6-0 at first singles), Swanger (6-4, 6-2 at second singles) and Nick Baesman (6-0, 6-0 at third singles).

Garnett and Kehoe teamed up for a 6-1, 6-2 win at first doubles while sophomores Kyle Baesman and Erik Naslund won 6-1, 6-0 at second doubles.

Hayes 4, DeSales 1

The Pacers swept the doubles courts and won two of the three singles matches to earn a non-league win Monday in Delaware.

Hayes winners included Kyle Klumpp (6-2, 4-6, 6-1 at first singles), Ben Teitelbaum (6-0, 6-0 at third singles), Ryan Williams and Eric Ullom (6-1, 6-3 at first doubles) and the duo of Craig Klumpp and Eric Puthoff (6-0, 6-1 at second doubles).

Big Walnut 4, Worthington Kilbourne 1

The Golden Eagles won all three singles matches on the way to a solid non-league win Monday in Sunbury.

Big Walnut standouts included Jared Deel, who won 6-4, 6-1 at first singles; Stephen Pushkin, who won 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 at second singles; D.J. Werner, who earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at third singles; and the duo of Nick Schulz and Lane Davis, who won 6-2, 6-3 at first doubles.

Also: Orange 3, Thomas Worthington 2.
