Transfer station contracts OK’d

Two contracts for work at the county’s transfer station were approved earlier this week by Delaware County commissioners.

The county’s transfer station, at 888 State Route 42, is where local garbage trucks deposit their trash before it is taken by another truck to a landfill.

According to the legislation, one contract is to pay Delaware-based excavator Mike Zimmerman $21,600 to install 60 feet of 12-inch water pipe in a catch basin that will tie into the county pump station.

“These drainage improvements will be done in the lower part of the site at the transfer station,” said Tiffany Jenkins, county director of environmental services. “It needs to be done prior to tipping floor replacement so that we could potentially use that lower floor for collecting waste while the tipping floor is closed.”

The tipping floor is where the garbage trucks tip out the trash. The concrete floors are prone to cracking and typically need replaced every couple of years.

The other contract would pay Dublin-based S&ME $11,525 to replace the tipping floor.

“This contract will be for construction and materials testing,” Jenkins said.

Commissioners unanimously approved both contracts without comment at their meeting Monday. Commissioners are also on the Delaware Knox Marion Morrow Joint Solid Waste District board of directors. The board implements the district’s solid waste management plan.

The county and Delaware General Health District websites said the transfer station accepts appliances (once freon is removed by a technician), construction and demolition debris, old newspapers, magazines, phone books and scrap tires. The district will hold a special collection event for tires and electronics from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds.

The transfer station is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. For more information, call 740-369-7700.
