Fun popping at Corn Show

An ear of small-town Americana is available at the Ashley Corn Show Thursday through Saturday in the center of the village.

“Everyone has a good time and relaxes, and it’s very inexpensive,” said Scott Lucas, post adjutant for American Legion Post 518, which puts on the show.

Things get started at 5 p.m. Thursday with “J.T.’s Famous Pork Dinner.” After dinner, people can play bingo, using corn kernels to place over the numbers, from 6 to 11 p.m. each day.

The entertainment Thursday are the White Lily Singers from 6 to 8 p.m., and oldies rock band 3 of a Kind from 8 to 10 p.m.

At 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, an open pit-roasted chicken dinner will be available – with half a chicken, baked beans, cole slaw and a roll. Lucas advises people to come early, because the dinners sell out. Another favorite, roasted ears of corn, are sold separately, and have been known to sell out, too, he said. Other food truck vendors will be available throughout the corn show, as well as carnival rides.

A bloodmobile drive will run from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday at the White Lily Chapel, 20 Main St. Also Friday is a kiddie tractor pull from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Lucas said there may be a corn cob-eating and corn cob-throwing contests from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Local oldies rock band Burning Diesel will perform from 8 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The show closes at 11 p.m. Saturday with a raffle drawing.

Admission is free, but funds raised from the event are used by the Legion for their Boys State and Girls State government camps for high school juniors; baseball team; candy for the Halloween parade; and buying memberships to the Ashley pool.

“It’s good to give back to the community,” Lucas said.

Ashley’s Corn Show dates back to the 1930s, and draws people from Delaware and surrounding counties. Lucas estimates 300 to 400 people attend each day.

“People come back here and see people they haven’t seen in years,” he said. “They come back for the corn show.”
