Authorities are warning Delaware County residents about a phone scam involving jury duty

Officials say a man impersonating a police officer calls residents and tells them they have missed jury duty in Delaware County Common Pleas Court. The man then tells residents that a bench warrant has been issued since they failed to appear.

He then says they have to pay anywhere from $500 to $2,700 in fines.

Officials say county residents who are legitimately summoned for jury duty will receive a packet of information in the mail far in advance of their report dates.

Legitimate law enforcement agencies and court services do not call or email and ask for personal information, such as account numbers, credit card information or Social Security numbers, officials say.

Officials warn residents not to give out personal information unless the residents are the ones making the calls.

Officials are asking anyone who receives a telephone call to contact the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 740-833-2830.
