Childhood cancer event Sept. 3

Mayor Carolyn Kay Riggle will officially proclaim September as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” in the city of Delaware at a celebration on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. in front of Whit’s Frozen Custard on Sandusky Street in downtown Delaware.

The signing of the proclamation comes at the request of childhood cancer advocate Thomas Cook, he said, on behalf of all of the children and families in Delaware who have been affected by childhood cancer.

“Because this is such a difficult and uncomfortable topic for people not directly affected by pediatric cancers to talk about, many in our community are under the impression they don’t know anyone affected by childhood cancer,” Cook said. “With one out of every 285 children being diagnosed with cancer before age 20, it is highly unlikely that anyone would not know a friend, coworker or neighbor who is not connected to one of these families in some way.

“By proclaiming September to be Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the city of Delaware, conversations will begin to take place and our citizens will begin to become aware of the ways they can help support those in our community dealing with the challenges of having a child diagnosed with cancer,” he added.

The public may join the families and childhood cancer organizations that will be gathered at the downtown celebration to kick off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month beginning at 6:30 p.m. It is being co- sponsored by the Heroes In Training Foundation, GoldNow and Whit’s Frozen Custard.
