Zach Kreft picked up a win and broke his school record by a full five seconds to lead the Buckeye Valley boys cross country team to a second-place finish at Monday’s Northmor Invitational.

Kreft finished with the top time among individuals (16:17.39) while Gavin Shearer finished fifth overall (18:11.53).

“I’m very pleased with our start,” BV coach Nate Ritz said. “We have room for improvements all around, but that will come with our training. Zach is coming off a full year of work, and the hard work will continue to show.”

The Baron boys finished second as a team despite two of their top five runners out of the lineup. The girls, led by a freshman and two sophomores, finished fifth.

Kennedy Cramer was the Barons’ top girl, closing 20th overall in 23:20.27.

BOYS SOCCER

Mitch Rotondo found the back of the net twice in the first 30 minutes and Sam Scharff hammered one home to break a 2-2 tie early in the second half as Buckeye Valley notched a 3-2 win over host Pleasant Monday afternoon.

“It was a big night for Mitch,” BV coach Eric Staley said, “and Sam’s goal was a beauty. A lot of guys would have bailed out on the play, but he wanted it too much.”

Pleasant’s Logan Thompson evened things up, bridging the end of the first half and start of the second with goals, but Scharff’s quick answer proved to be the difference.

BV held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal while Baron Keeper Caleb King finished with two saves in the win.

GIRLS GOLF

Madeleine Diley fired a 53 and Darby Pfeiffer finished with a 59 to lead the Buckeye Valley girls golf team during Monday’s dual with host Jonathan Alder.

The Barons carded a combined 239 while the Pioneers captured top honors with a 210.
