‘If it’s not a high-tech wall, don’t waste money’

To the editor:

The issue of what to do about illegal immigrants and anchor babies (I know that’s politically incorrect, but get over it) is the hot topic in the political arena these days, and it won’t soon go away.

Donald Trump has made it his keystone subject and has promised that, if he is elected president, he will build a wall to seal the border, and deport 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country. But is that realistic or fair to those millions of illegal immigrants? After all, they were invited in by our government through its abysmal failure to secure the border and enforce our laws; so as far as I’m concerned, they have the right to be here, but not the right to automatic citizenship, or voting rights. If they want that, they must come forward and identify themselves, go to the end of the line, and go through the established process for citizenship. If they don’t want to do that, then they must obtain work permits, with time limits, pay income taxes, and obey our laws.

As far as building a wall is concerned, if it’s not a high-tech wall, don’t waste the money. No wall will be 100 percent effective but, if you’re going to build one, build the best. Untying the hands of our border patrol agents and greatly increasing their numbers have to be done, in addition to building any wall. These measures will not stop illegal entry but they will greatly reduce it.

Illegal immigration by Mexicans is not our only immigration problem. I cannot believe that all of the Muslim immigrants, from whatever country they’re from, are citizens. Many come here on work or student visas and then disappear from the radar. No one knows where they are, or what they’re up to, and they don’t seem to care either. If we are going to have wide open borders, then quit wasting our tax dollars on the border patrol, Coast Guard, Homeland Security, FBI, CIA, NSA, all of our armed forces, state and local police forces, and U.S. marshals. Throw our hands up in surrender to the world, and lay down a huge welcome mat encircling the entire U.S. …
