Sweet Feat 5k walk on Sept. 26 in Delaware

A healthy walk for a good cause can be done before an upcoming Ohio State football game.

The second annual Sweet Feat 5K Walk will take place at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 26 at Willow Brook at Delaware Run, 100 Delaware Crossing West. Registration is at 8 a.m.

“We see a lot of diabetic and at-risk patients, so last year we came up with an idea to organize an event to help get people off on the right foot to a healthier lifestyle, whether that person is older, has excess weight or hasn’t exercised much,” said Tom Sherer, spokesman for the Foot and Ankle Wellness Center, which is putting on the event.

The event takes place on the Willow Brook property, and not on a public road, Sherer said.

Last year, 40 to 50 people participated, instead of competed.

“It’s not intended to be an ultra-competitive 5K event,” Sherer said. “It’s intended to be a nice family-friendly outing.”

The average person can walk the 3.1 miles in an hour or less.

Registration is $25 at www.sweetfeat.org or at the podiatry center, 1871 W. William St.; or $30 the day of the event. Children 12 and under can participate for free. There will also be giveaways and free foot screenings.

Proceeds from the walk benefit the Central Ohio Diabetes Association, and the person who raises the most funds to be donated will receive a grand prize.

The Sweet Feat website said 29.1 million Americans — 9.3 percent of the population — had diabetes in 2012, and deaths from the disease are expected to rise in the next decade.

“Our motto is healthy feet and ankles are the foundation of an active lifestyle,” Sherer said. “From our perspective, the more weight that you’re carrying, the more likely you’re going to have problems for your feet and ankles.”
