Eagles race past Pioneers in New Albany

Staff Report

New Albany raced out to a 9-0 lead after one and never looked back, rolling to a 39-14 OCC-Capital Division win over visiting Orange Friday night.

The Eagles’ Casey Horch opened the scoring with an 80-yard touchdown pass to Eric Klopfenstein on the first play of the game. The ensuing two-point conversion was no good, but a 48-yard field goal later in the quarter gave them a 9-0 lead they only added to as the game went on.

Mitch Clifford got the Pioneers (0-4, 0-1 OCC) on the board, recovering a fumble for a score with 5:50 left in the second quarter, but New Albany’s (2-2, 0-1 OCC) Victor White scored on a 47-yard TD run to make it a 22-7 game with 3:52 left in the half.

Orange’s J.D. Dayhuff made it 32-14 with a 45-yard touchdown run with 33 seconds left in the third, but that’s as close as it would get.

The Pioneers moved the ball fairly well, gaining 331 yards of total offense, but committed four turnovers in the setback.

Dayhuff completed 13 of his 18 passes for 100 yards and an interception. He also sparked the team’s ground game with 95 yards rushing. Tyler Lichter was also solid, covering 90 yards on 11 carries.

Horch completed 10 of his 16 passes for 110 yards and a pair of scores while White and Brandon DeHass combined for 231 yards to lead the Eagles on the ground.
