Neitzelt goal lifts Ohio Wesleyan over Hanover

Junior midfielder Phoenix Neitzelt (Delaware/Hayes) scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime to give the Ohio Wesleyan men’s soccer team a 2-1 non-conference win over Hanover on Wednesday in Hanover, Ind.

Neitzelt notched the game-winner 2:46 into the second overtime period. Junior back Nick Norman (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) sent the ball to senior forward Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.), who headed it on to Neitzelt, and Neitzelt headed the ball home to end the game.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when a Norman crossing pass deflected off a Hanover defender and into the Panther goal.

The Bishops had a chance to increase the lead midway through the first half, but a shot by senior midfielder Gunnar Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) was saved by Hanover keeper Rafael DiMaio, and Schaefer’s follow shot was high.

Senior goalkeeper Michael McDermott (Alliance/Marlington), making his first collegiate start, preserved the lead late in the first half by stopping back-to-back shots by Walker Goodbub and Ben Wheeler.

Hanover evened the game in the 65th minute when Enrico Franchini headed home a direct kick by Will Bridgeman.

Ohio Wesleyan had a chance to win the game during the final minute of regulation time, earning a corner kick, but Neitzelt’s shot was cleared off the line by the Panther defense.

McDermott kept the game going with a pair of saves during the first overtime period, including a stop on a shot by Matthew Hand during the closing seconds of the period.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Hanover, 20-13. McDermott made 5 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. DiMaio finished with 5 saves for Hanover.
