Turning Point awarded grant from Attorney General’s Office

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has announced that his office is awarding more than $51 million to 307 crime victim service providers across Ohio, including Turning Point, the local domestic violence shelter.

Turning Point was one of the recipients of the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant. Turning Point — a non-profit agency serving a six-county area of Crawford, Delaware, Marion, Morrow, Union and Wyandot counties — will use the grant toward hiring new staff, paying for current operational costs and new technology.

The contributions are given due to an increase in VOCA grant funding from the U.S. Department of Justice for 2015-16. Ohio received a significant increase in VOCA funding for this fiscal year — over $50 million — as opposed to last fiscal year 2014-15.

Upon receiving news of the grant, Turning Point executive director Paula Roller said: “Our agency is grateful to be chosen as one of the many organizations through the Ohio Attorney General’s Expanding Services and Empowering Victims Initiative. We are excited to continue the growth of our services by adding new positions to support our staff, as well as advanced program specific software and laptops. This will ultimately make pivotal strides toward our mission of meeting the needs of domestic violence victims and address the causes of domestic violence.”

Aside from grants given to agencies serving victims of domestic violence, the rest of the allotted funds will go toward organizations providing services for sexual assault victims, at-risk youth, human trafficking victims and child advocacy centers, as well as court-appointed special advocates and prosecutor-based programs.

Turning Point’s funding comes for a variety of sources, including the United Way and the Delaware/Morrow Mental Health and Recovery Services Board.
