Last year when seven ash trees infested with emerald ash borer were being removed from Sunbury Village Square, Village Council members decided to leave one 15-foot high stump in place for a Sunbury bicentennial woodcarving.
Late last week and early this week Jerry Ward, a wood sculptor from Delton, Michigan, was in town with his chainsaws, working on the three-day job. When asked what the carving would be, Ward said he was sworn to secrecy when he began the project.
Ward, who hand-carves polished wood fine art sculptures, said he has been doing chainsaw sculptures since 1979.
“This kind of thing I don’t advertise,” Ward said. “I only do two or three of these each year.”
