Delaware County Administrator Tim Hansley to retire

Delaware County Administrator Tim Hansley will retire on Jan. 15, 2016.

“I’ve enjoyed the challenges and successes,” Hansley said in his written notice to the county’s board of commissioners on Thursday. “I am especially proud of the staff development that has taken place during my tenure.”

Hansley said he hoped the six-week notice would give commissioners adequate time to fill the position.

The county administrator since November 2010, Hansley has spent more than 45 years as a public servant.

He has degrees from Capital University and the University of Oklahoma; and has taught at Wright State University and Capital University. After serving four years in the U.S. Coast Guard, Hansley worked for the city of Cincinnati. He was Westerville’s director of finance before serving as city manager for Tipp City, Lebanon, Dublin, Conneaut, Beavercreek and Pickerington, all in Ohio.

Hansley’s retirement was based on “a variety of factors,” Commission President Gary Merrell said in a statement issued by commissioners.

“I have watched Tim put his heart and soul into doing whatever is best for Delaware County,” Merrell said. “His wealth of knowledge, integrity, mentoring, leadership – and even his dry sense of humor – will be missed by me, and I’m certain many others.”

“I will greatly miss Administrator Hansley and his wise counsel and steady hand,” said Commissioner Barb Lewis. “He has been instrumental in the success of our county in so many areas, such as the construction of our new courthouse, the Simon-Tanger outlet mall, and Sawmill Parkway.”

“Tim has been a great help to me,” said Jeff Benton, the county’s newest commissioner. “His depth of experience, knowledge, and savvy have been extremely valuable in my first few months. Perhaps his greatest contribution is that he has been instrumental in recruiting and developing excellent leaders in key roles for Delaware County. Tim will be missed.”

A county administrator is responsible for many of the county’s day-to-day administrative operations. The administrator is appointed and attends commissioner meetings, but does not vote.
