Flu-shot clinic Saturday

The Delaware General Health District will hold a clinic Saturday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon and will offer flu shots and FluMist while supplies last.

This clinic is offered just in time for the holidays, according to district officials, as it takes about two weeks after vaccination for the immune system to build the antibodies needed for protection against the flu.

This past fall, the nation experienced a shortage in FluMist, but the health district was able to obtain a generous supply, officials said.

Health district officials say they encourage residents who have not received their annual flu vaccine to not wait. The flu vaccine is the best tool available to protect against this potentially serious disease, they say. As long as flu viruses are spreading, it is not too late to get vaccinated.

They noted that vaccination is especially important for protecting those at high-risk for serious flu complications, including:

• Young children.

• Pregnant women.

• Adults 65 years and older.

• Anyone with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes and heart disease.

The district’s Saturday clinic will be at at 3 W. Winter St. in Delaware.
