A somber reminder

The display of holiday wreaths in front of the Ohio Department of Transportation District 6 office is not one of cheerful celebration, but rather a somber remembrance of those lost this year to fatal crashes. This marks the fifth year the SAFE Delaware County Coalition, led by the Delaware General Health District, has displayed these wreaths — each representing a life lost. In those five years, 69 people have lost their lives to traffic crashes, with 12 of those occurring this year. According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, Ohio has seen a rise in traffic deaths with more than 1,000 recorded this year. In addition, 37 percent of those traffic deaths involved unbelted drivers and passengers. The SAFE Delaware coalition uses this time of year to remind residents to consider others while on the road by driving sober and undistracted, with your seatbelt fastened.
