Superintendent challenges teachers for Delaware Lions’ pancake breakfast

The Delaware Lions Club are celebrating its 65th year by serving up “all you can eat” pancakes at its 65th annual pancake breakfast.

The breakfast will be on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Dempsey Middle School from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $5 per person, with children 5 and under eating for free.

A new event featured at this year’s breakfast is a pancake-eating contest between select Delaware school teachers and city schools Superintendent Paul Craft.

“I am challenging a staff member from each of our schools to a pancake-eating contest at the Delaware Lions Club 65th annual pancake breakfast,” said Craft. “I invite students and families to come cheer on the contestants as we gather to help our Delaware Lions in their efforts to raise money to support our local community.”

The school pancake-eating contest will begin at 9 a.m. Other activities will include demonstrations by a trained “pilot dog,” a bake sale and large raffle with more than $1,000 in prizes. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Dempsey Singers, the Delaware band and Hayes Players.

“We are excited to highlight our ongoing partnership with the Delaware area schools at this year’s breakfast,” said Owen Hickey, event co-chair. “We anticipate an entertaining contest between the teachers and Superintendent Craft.”

The Delaware Lions Club’s mission for the past 65 years has been to help the visually impaired in the Delaware community. The Lions Club outreach efforts assist with the cost of vision aids. This year they have purchased two pilot dogs for $10,000 each.

In 2015, the Delaware Lions Club purchased the Welsh Allen SureSight Vision Screener for Delaware area schools to help catch vision problems in students at an early age.

In addition, the club continues to partner with People in Need to help people with vision needs by providing financial assistance for items like eye exams and glasses.
