Delaware County Historical Society plans open house Feb. 20-21

The Delaware County Historical Society will celebrate the official opening of the Meeker Homestead and The Barn at Stratford with a two-day open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, and Sunday, Feb. 21.

The event is free to the public, and refreshments will be served.

Guided tours of the nearly 200-year-old house and stone-end bank barn will be offered, and historical society board members and other volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the history of the property and the society’s plans going forward.

The group recently announced that the house will serve as a museum, and the Barn at Stratford will be offered as a venue for weddings, receptions, corporate events and other occasions.

In connection with these plans, longtime historical society volunteer Donna Meyer recently was hired as the organization’s first-ever paid director, and Connie Hoffman, a lifelong Delaware County resident with an extensive background in event planning, was hired to manage The Barn at Stratford.

The property, which for years operated as Garth’s Auctions, was a gift to the Delaware County Historical Society from Garth’s former owners, Carolyn and the late Tom Porter. The house and barn are on Stratford Road at the intersection of U.S. 23 on Delaware’s south side.

The Delaware County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote, preserve and sustain interest in Delaware County history.
